Notifications
SplitEase keeps you informed about activity in your groups so you never miss an expense, settlement, or invitation.
What Triggers Notifications
You'll receive notifications when:
- A new expense is added to a group you're in.
- An expense is edited or deleted that involves you.
- A settlement is recorded that involves you.
- You're invited to a group by another user.
- A member joins or leaves a group you're in.
Viewing Notifications
Notifications appear in two places:
- Bell icon in the top navigation — shows a badge with your unread count. Click it for a quick preview of recent notifications.
- Notifications page — a full list of all your notifications, where you can review and manage them.
Notification Preferences
You can control how many notifications you receive from each group. Open the group's settings to choose one of three levels:
All Notifications (Default)
You're notified about everything that happens in the group — new expenses, settlements, membership changes, and more.
Action Required Only
You'll only be notified about things that need your attention:
- Settlements involving you
- Group invitations
Day-to-day expense activity won't generate notifications.
Muted
No notifications from this group at all. You can still see all activity when you visit the group — you just won't be pinged about it.
A Note on Preferences
Your notification preferences only affect your own notifications. Changing your preference to "Muted" doesn't prevent other members from receiving their notifications. Everyone controls their own settings independently.
Real-Time Updates
SplitEase delivers updates in real time. When someone adds an expense or records a settlement, you'll see it appear automatically — no need to refresh the page. This applies to both the notifications list and the group's expense and balance views.
