Groups
A group is a shared space for tracking expenses between a set of people. You might have a group for your apartment, a vacation, a regular dinner club, or any situation where people share costs.
Creating a Group
To create a group, you need three things:
- Name — Something descriptive like "Iceland Trip 2026" or "Apartment 4B."
- Default currency — The currency used for most expenses in this group. You can still add individual expenses in other currencies.
- Emoji icon (optional) — A fun visual identifier for your group.
Managing Members
Inviting Users
Invite people to your group by entering their email address. They'll receive a notification and can accept or decline the invitation. Once they accept, they become a full member of the group and can view all expenses, add new ones, and record settlements.
Placeholder Members
Sometimes you need to track expenses for someone who isn't on SplitEase yet. Placeholder members solve this — they're stand-in entries that let you include a person in expenses and splits before they've created an account.
When that person eventually joins SplitEase and accepts an invitation to the group, their placeholder is automatically linked to their real account. All the expenses and balances that were tracked under the placeholder transfer seamlessly to their profile.
How Invitations Work
When you invite someone to a group:
- They receive a notification (visible in the app if they already have an account).
- They can accept to join the group and see all its expenses and balances.
- They can decline if they don't want to participate.
If the invitee is linked to an existing placeholder member, accepting the invitation connects their account to that placeholder's history.
Group Settings
Group owners can update the following at any time:
- Name — Rename the group as needed.
- Emoji — Change or remove the group icon.
- Default currency — Update the default currency for new expenses.
Archiving and Deleting Groups
Only the group owner can archive or delete a group.
- Archiving makes the group read-only. All data is preserved, but no new expenses or settlements can be added. This is useful for trips or events that are over but you want to keep the records.
- Deleting permanently removes the group and all its data. This action cannot be undone.
